BRUSYLIV TOWN

Brusyliv is a small town located on river Zdvyzh. It is one of the 23 districts of Zhytomyr region. Brusyliv is situated for 85 km to the west from Kyiv and on 80 km to the east from the regional centre Zhytomyr and for 25 km from railway station Skochyshche.

The area of the town is 16,5 sq. km and the population is 5,1 thousands persons. National structure: Ukrainian - 98 %, the others - mainly Poles and Russians.

The bus station of town has connection with Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Fastiv, Narodychi, Malyn, Radomyshl, Korostyshiv. Brusyliv is also transit way to Popilnya, Andrushivka, Vinnytsya and other western and southern towns of Ukraine.

Minerals: peat, clay, sand.

Former name of Brusyliv was Zdvyzhensk which was mentioned in Ippatiev annals of 1097 and 1150 though the town had found much earlier.

At the first time Brusyliv is dated 1543 during Lithuanian-Russian state. Brusyliv was a strengthen fortress in period of Kyiv Rus and significant craft and trade town during feudalism. In 1585 the Magdeburg right has been given to Brusyliv.

People of Brusyliv participant in revolts of Kosinskogo and Nalivajka against social and economic oppression Polish magnate.

During national war of 1648-1654 Brusyliv was place of disposition of Pavolotsk regiment. According to Andrusiv armistice in 1667 Brusyliv has remained under Poland authority. Brusyliv´s inhabitants entered to Ivan Bondarenko's groups during "Koliivschyna".

The large stone castle was built in that time when Chatsky was owner of Brusyliv. In 1787 there was a church at which a school had been existed.

After second separation of Poland Brusyliv have been attached to Russia, and in 1797 it became the volost centre of Radomyshl district of the Kyiv province.

In the beginning of XX century 14 thousands inhabitants lived in Brusyliv.

In due course Brusyliv started to fall into decay and from a small town has turned on village. During the Second World War Brusyliv was ruined and many citizens of town were killed on the battles field.

Nowadays the baker and milk factories produce many goods not only for Brusyliv’s inhabitants but other Ukrainian and foreign consumers.

There are two secondary schools, a kindergarten, a district clinic and hospital, the House of culture, children's musical school, sports school, two libraries, the centre of youthful creativity "Dream", historical museum in Brusyliv.

Branches of two Ukrainian and one international banks are successful function.

Religious communities of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv patriarchy, Catholic Church, Church of Christians of belief Evangelical, Churches of independent Christians of belief Evangelical "the Blessings a message" operate here.

The elements of ancient architecture has remained in town - the rests of a church of Kaputsin Award (1787), place of the old town in the centre of Brusyliv (ХІ-ХІІ century), the castle (XІV century), 2 burial ground on suburb of a small town (ХІІ-ХІІІ century).

In 1997 Shevchenko´s bust was set up in Brusyliv.
